Recently I was commissioned to photograph the shows of the second Km.o theatre festival held at teatre La Vilella, Barcelona; organised by Cia. Sargantana & Espai En Construcció. (The first Km.0 festival was in 2015 & then, too, I was privileged to shoot the event which can be viewed on this website.) Currently this is my favourite kind of photography, the challenge of having only a few vital minutes rehearsal time to capture the essence of a performance I have never seen before & know nothing about. Shooting a rehearsal, as opposed to an audience-present performance, allows me to get close to the artists involved & intimate with their behaviour. I suppose it's similar to a scuba diver swimming with dolphins; the two elements juxtaposed to create a third unique possibility that arises from the advent of capturing visual evidence of the activity. I can never really be an integral part of the universe of a performance unfolding before me, but if it allows, by courtesy of the performers permissiveness, I have the opportunity to capture instances of the flow of their expression & possibly garner a comprehensive representation of their work. Here then are images from the six productions which were performed to capacity audiences at teatre La Vilella during 'Km.0 2017' between 25th & 28th May. Click title to view post...
