It was back in June of this year (see June 11th archive) that Orland & I made our first street butoh shoot in Barcelona, in a fairly busy pedestrian street environment. A few days ago, since Orland's recent return from a journey of discovery throughout Japan & China, we decided to shoot more improvised butoh in a public space in Barcelona. This time though we chose a quieter place with more ornate surroundings, a Greek style garden near Montjuïc.

We timed our arrival in the gardens to coincide with the sunset & after spending about fifteen minutes scouting for a suitable space we decided upon a long narrow balcony soaked in sunlight. Orland donned a plain black mask & so began interacting with the environment.

I used a 35mm lens only throughout the whole shoot; with a few steps backwards or forwards I was able to either maintain a good distance to take in the overhead trellising, the stone pillars & creeping plants, or capture intimate images of Orland expressing more subtle & detailed body movement, such as hand gesticulation.
Eventually, succumbing to the heat factor, Orland doffed his attached mask in favour of his reality mask.
Along with a spontaneous bout of chanting, the setting of the sun brought our session to a soft halt.
